Before I begin today's little update, we have capacity this week still! So if you're looking for that last cut, or your hedges trimmed now that the birds aren't nesting, or anything else garden related, drop us a message and we will arrange your quote.
Now, I'm usually a subscriber of the opinion that the customer is always right. But, that opinion has been challenged somewhat by today's little exchange of messages between myself and someone enquiring about a front & back cut...
Like most gardening firms, we do not publish (or even have) set prices, but rather will give a price based on available facts - for lawns this would include the current state of the grass, its length, the size (we price in square metres) and so forth.
Like many gardeners, we aim to earn around £30 an hour and will price accordingly. Whilst we don't bill by the hour (big mistake - you are penalised for being efficient whilst a slow lazy gardener gets rewarded) having an idea of how much you need to earn just to stay a float is good business sense.
This particular enquiry wanted a price, but had not provided pictures or an indication of size, but had given their street. In this case I was able to check Google maps to look at the typical sizes of gardens in that street. I gave her a price range of between £30-£60. And she replied "30-60 just to cut grass lol".
Good luck finding someone cheaper! A good plumber takes £60 before he even steps over your door. Good. Bad. Hell, even a cowboy! Who is going to work for less than minimum wage? Not me, for one. Once I've taken out my overheads, I'm not making a great deal. I think our prices are fair, and when you factor in the discounts I offer to our locals, I know they are getting value for money (since there is no travel involved, I will usually knock off an additonal £5+).
We don't just mow your lawn, we give it a good rake afterwards. Even a small lawn can take 30-60minutes once you include raking and bagging up the cuttings. We do not use a collection box on the back of the mower, so this is a step we do not ignore.
Once you account for overheads - cost of fuel, cost of waste disposal, liability insurance, motor insurance, employers insurance, advertising, telephony & Internet, web hosting. The list goes on... If you think that £30 for 90 minutes work is not a fair price, then good look finding someone cheaper who will also take away your rubbish.
